On February 1, 1907, eleven shareholders signed an Organization Certificate for an Association
to be titled "First National Bank of McClusky". The bank was located in the village of
McClusky, County of McLean, and State of North Dakota. The capital stock of the Association
was $25,000, dividend into 250 shares of $100 each.
Several months later, on September 23, 1907, First National Bank purchased the Merchants
State Bank of McClusky. The next day, First National Bank of McClusky opened. A newer
structure was completed in 1966 just a few doors south of the original site.
On December 31, 1931, Sheridan County State Bank and First National Bank of McClusky
merged, and J.E. (James) Davis became president.
Members of the Davis family were the first permanent settlers in what is now Sheridan County,
establishing a large ranching operation midway between Denhoff and Goodrich. J.E. Davis
had been a Director of Sheridan County State Bank since 1914, but his interest in banking
started years before. In the early 1900's, when the area was first being settled, J.E. would lend
homesteaders cash 'operating loans', along with two bred cows. At calving time, J.E. would get
one of the calves-the bull calf if there was one to each-to add to his own herd, and the borrower
could keep the cows and the second calf to continue to build a herd. J.E. remained in the
banking business until his retirement.
J.E.'s oldest son, John E. Davis, spent many years as a Director and Chairman of the Board of
First National Bank of McClusky. He took time away from the bank to serve as a Company
Commander and later as Battalion Commander in the 134th Infantry in Europe. John was
discharged in 1945 and was involved in the day to day operations of the bank until 1956. He
served as Mayor of McClusky from 1946 until 1952 and as State American Legion Commander
from 1947 to 1948. He was elected to the North Dakota Senate in 1952 and elected Governor
of North Dakota in 1956. After serving as Governor for four years he held the positions of
National Commander of the American Legion and National Civil Defense Director.
John E. Davis, Jr., began his tenure at First National Bank of McClusky in the fall of 1967 and
continues as Chairman of the board today. His younger brother, Rick, also sits on the Board
of Directors.
In November of 2005, First Security Bank of Underwood was purchased. On December 1,
2006 the banks were merged and the name was changed to North Country Bank.
Besides the McClusky and Underwood locations, there are branch offices in Goodrich,
Mercer, and Riverdale.
The original assets of $25,000.00 in 1907 had grown to $3 million by 1966 and today North
Country Bank is a $50 million financial institution. It retains the national charter originally
carried by First National Bank of McClusky.
